Course Correction - Rebellion

We are called to be submitted to authority. For us to be happy and successful in any endeavor this is a requirement of WILLING OBEDIENCE to:

  • God

  • God's Word

  • Holy Spirit

  • Those human individuals and entities placed in legitimate authority over us (government, family, church, employers, etc.). All in this order of priority.

If one goes back to the root of every single ill in the world, the source is disobedience and rebellion. This is the same sort of pride that led the devil to rebellion in heaven, and results in a bad outcome for the rebel.

Obedience cannot be commanded successfully for long, and must be based upon both authority and power. A police officer has the authority of the government behind him when he displays his badge. However, if an individual is determined to rob a bank and chooses to ignore the badge and commanding voice, the officer additionally has the right to use his weapon to force compliance with the law. Neither of those guarantees a determined law-breaker will not continue his rebellion and face the consequences.

In the private sector, the wise employee will take a request from a supervisor as a command. In the final analysis he/she is the one responsible and accountable for the results of his/her decisions.

Many years ago as the young (now you can see how many years ago) manager of a fast food restaurant I made an unwise decision to hire a relative by marriage. This sort of mistake was made twice in my retail career before the lights truly came on in my little noggin. She refused in front of the other employees to clean the restrooms ("I do not do restrooms!"). I gave her a couple of opportunities to share the responsibilities of all employees, to her belligerent refusal. With regret I dismissed her at the close of the shift. This attitude of doing what she wanted, when she wanted and how she wanted carried over into her personal life with dire consequences to herself and her family. Yielding to a spirit of rebellion will lead a person to say and do very stupid things.

If you have displayed such an attitude and messed up, the correction is simple: confess you were wrong, make amends, and commit to doing right going forward. Or as Jesse Duplantis has said: "Admit it, quit it, then fergit it!"
