CAVEAT: These articles are for fiction writing purposes only, and is not to be used for any unlawful purposes.
This series of indeterminate length will focus on unclassified aspects of espionage that can be incorporated into novels. It is based on actual training provided in the security industry, and will help make your characters and settings believable. Not an exhaustive listing, there are many other tactics that can be employed.
Part Two - Evading Non-electronic Surveillance
Foot Surveillance
(1) Enter a multi-entrance building, preferably one with a high level of traffic.
(2) Enter a large crowd.
(3) Have a confederate distract the "tail."
(3) Have a confederate in some way block the progress of the "tail."
(4) Have a confederate change outer clothes with you and head off in a different direction.
(5) Enter a police station, fire station or ambulance service. This obviously is not a good choice if the law enforcement agency is performing the surveillance.
(6) Enter a restricted or denied area.
(7) Use traffic control devices to advantage.
Vehicular Surveillance
(1) Enter a one-way street going the wrong way.
(2) Speed up.
(3) Enter heavy traffic, changing lanes to increase the distance.
(4) Have a confederate block the path of the "tail."
(5) Have a confederate in an identical vehicle take the place and decoy the "tail."
(6) Use traffic control devices to advantage.
